Community Champions

A self-described “urban kid with rural roots,” Raúl grew up eating produce from local chinampas (Aztec era floating gardens) and understood the value of local farming – and their struggles. He created a non-profit, Colectivo Ahuejote, that works to rehabilitate abandoned chinampas to promote a sustainable food system and the country’s agricultural heritage. But, even more important, they support community development. Colectivo Ahuejote focuses their work on growing agroecological produce, education and exploring new socioeconomic dynamics with farmers. His goal is to develop cooperation among farmers, help them become entrepreneurs and inspire youth to embrace farming careers. During the pandemic, chinampas proved their value, helping to sustain the city when many other resources were shut down.
